The Lowther Estate is an important Estate in Cumbria with a long architectural history. The present Lowther Castle, by Smirke is a ruin and the practice was commissioned to provide a new house within the earliest part of the historic Park. The design was one of the first classical schemes to gain planning consent at appeal under Clause 11 of the PPS7 legislation.
The house is to be constructed of local stone with a Cumbrian slate roof and is a synthesis of Palladian and Mannerist ideas.
