THE CHAPEL OF CHRIST THE REDEEMER, CULHAM

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A new Catholic chapel in the south of England, within the grounds of an 18th-century country house. On a simple basilican plan, the aisle-less nave begins with an elemental Doric entrance portico and ends in an apse, with a crypt below. The exterior is of Portland stone ashlar, with panels of knapped flint in the local manner. Inside, the nave has a structural stone vault. The apse with its gilded mosaic ceiling houses a seated figure of Christ by Classical sculptor Alexander Stoddart, who provided an extensive programme of sculpture for the chapel. As part of the project, every item for liturgical use was designed by the Practice, including the organ case, light fittings, vestments and altar plate.
