Classical stone mausoleum designed by Craig Hamilton Architects within a historic cemetery landscape, featuring monumental entrance columns and traditional funerary architecture.

A NEW SEPULCHRE

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A new mausoleum at Highgate West Cemetery; the first to be built there for more than a hundred years. The exterior is presented as a formal, abstract ‘temple’ in the elemental mode. It is built entirely of Indiana limestone including a structural stone roof. The barrel-vaulted jewel-like interior uses polished red limestone and white statuary marble, inlaid with decorative motifs, and houses a marble statue of an angel by Classical sculptor Alexander Stoddart. It is entered through a pair of monumental bronze doors, and lit from either end by semicircular bronze windows.

Hand-carved stone frieze featuring vine, grape and wheat motifs within a classical mausoleum, demonstrating traditional stonemasonry craftsmanship.
